In rare fashion, the Heisman Trophy went to the most deserving football player in all of college football. Robert Griffin III distinguished himself with a great performance on the last game of the season, leading his Baylor Bears past the Texas Longhorns. After the game, when interviewed, the well-spoken Griffin said that he believed that Baylor just proved itself worthy of the school's first Heisman Trophy winner. He was right.
Despite finishing a close 2nd place, Andrew Luck, although a great player who had a great season, should not have finished so close. If Griffin played for Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Alabama, etc., he would have won more handily. But kudos to the voters that got it right. The winner should go to the most deserving, not the most publicized.
Hopefully this will start a new trend. No more Heisman Trophies to the quarterbacks for USC just because they play for USC, or running backs for Alabama just because they go undefeated or only have one loss. The winner goes to... the best player in college football. What a novel concept!
